Road Trip Bound – Don’t Forget to Exit the Freeway

Collaboration between Toyota and the National Audubon Society
Excite, explore and breathe fresh air by taking the scenic route on your summer road trip

Now that our kids have grown passed the “kids fly free age” we rarely fly anywhere as a family. In fact most of our trips are confined within the borders of California with exception of a Las Vegas road trip every now and then. We usually drive at night to avoid the back-seat noise and extra potty breaks, but now that the kids are a little bit older it might be fun the spice up our road-trips and do some exploring.

A few weeks ago Toyota and the National Audubon Society decided to team up this summer and ask Americans to Exit the Highway and pledge to spend more time taking scenic roads to explore nature. With so many National Parks in the area that shouldn’t be hard to do at all.

We are already packing the kids up this weekend, so they can spend some time with the grandparents in Sacramento. We make the swap at Harris Ranch which is about halfway between LA and Sacramento. While there isn’t much to see right off the highway it may be fun to venture off with the Hubs once we make the switch to see what we can find.

I’m really excited about the Exit the Highway pledge because we ALWAYS stick to the freeway and it just makes the trips dreadfully boring. Except for that one time when we discovered after a brief potty break that we were traveling on the wrong freeway and had been for the last hour!

Toyota and the National Audubon Society have made it extremely easy for you to take the scenic route on your travels by suggesting parks and places to visit in your area. In fact you don’t have to take a road trip across the state to enjoy nature. You can design an itinerary that’s local and make it a stay-cation instead.

Just in Los Angeles I already found some places that I wanted to visit with my camera, like the Griffith Observatory and Ballona Freshwater Marsh.

To learn more about Exit Highway and to pledge to drive the scenic route visit www.exitthehighway.togethergreen.org. Share your experience with others by uploading photos directly to the websites or post on your social networks using the hashtag #exitthehighway in each post.

With your pledge and every photo you share you will be entered to win a new Toyota Prius V, the most recent hybrid in the Toyota family, which boasts excellent cargo space.

This month we will be road-tripping it to Sacramento and San Diego, so I’ll definitely have my camera fully charged this time around. And who knows we might actually have fun this time around.
