This week’s interview is with Victoria McGee Walton who invented a product that we all could of used when our babies were little. Remember that little bald spot on the back of their head. Well Victoria created Baby Walton to prevent baby balding. Read her story below.

What inspired you start your business?
I became inspired after both of my babies experienced infant baldness. I searched for a solution to prevent infant baldness when my first baby developed an unsightly bald spot on the back of her head, but no products were available on the market. I consulted her pediatrician, family and friends and realized that infant baldness was a common problem for nearly all babies. After my second baby developed the same unsightly bald spot on the back of his head, I realized I had to create a solution myself, the Infant Hair Protector was born. After seeing my son’s hair restored within 30 days, I felt so inspired and wanted to share the Infant Hair Protector with parents everywhere.

How long have you been in business?
I started Baby Walton, LLC February 2008, but the Infant Hair Protector has only been on the market since September 2008.

What did you do in your past work life?
Well, I have a B.A. degree in Human Resources Management from Birmingham-Southern College. I have worked as Retail Sales Associate, Life & Health Operations Assistant, Employment Recruiter, HR Claims Coordinator, Automobile Production Team Member and stay-at-home mom. Although, my dream has always been to start my own business!

Describe your ideal workday.
I wake up around 6 am, make breakfast for my husband, shower and get ready for the day. Before the kids awake I check emails, answer emails and process orders. Then, around 8 am I make breakfast for me and the kids. Next, play with the kids and have story time until lunch time. I prepare lunch; we eat lunch and I put the kids down for naptime. Then, during the kids naptime, I make business phone calls, have conference calls, ship orders and work on cost effective PR, advertising and marketing ideas for the business. By then naptime is over and I make dinner. We all sit down to have dinner together, play and laugh. Then, I put the kids to be around 8 pm and have a little quality time with my husband. Once again, I check my emails before I go to bed around 10:30 pm.

What have been some of your major successes?
Definitely getting my product into seven baby boutique/retail stores within six months of launching the Infant Hair Protector. What have been some of your major challenges?
Well, finding a quality manufacturer to produce the Infant Hair Protectors at an affordable price with good quality. Also, getting PR coverage to get the word out about the Infant Hair Protector, but the word is now spreading.

On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
I believe my inner drive, passion and belief in this product keeps me going. I am determined to make this business successful, because the product really works. Also, knowing that my product will help other parents keep their babies looking their best. Definitely, the frequent encouragement from my husband and family. My family is so proud and supportive of me starting my own business, especially my husband. Having a supportive spouse, really keeps me going.

What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
My family comes first. It’s just that simple! Definitely, prioritizing and lots of planning makes balancing business and family work for me.

If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
Always believe in your business and be faithful to the vision of your business. Most of all, you can do anything you put your mind to.

Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
My favorite business tool/resource is the internet, Small Business Adminitration at www.SBA.gov and Moms Inventors Handbook by Tamara Monosoff.

What is next for your business?
I hope to expand my product line and get the Infant Hair Protector in major retail stores like Babies R’ US and Target. Hopefully, get the Infant Hair Protector in all the baby boutique stores across the USA and abroad.

What is your two cents sales pitch?
