how will the at&t iphone plan rates effect you?

Starting today all new AT&T customers new to the iPhone will not have access to the current $30 per month unlimited data plan rate that has been in effect since AT&T became the only iPhone service provider in the nation.

New iPhone users will be able choose between two plans: DataPlus and DataPro.

The DataPlus plan (200 MB of data) for $15 per month is designed for people who primarily surf the web, send email, and use social networking apps. According to AT&T about 65% of iPhone customers use less than 200MB per month. However if you do use 200MB, you’ll receive an additional 200MB of data usage for an additional $15 and you are more than welcome to replenish your MB throughout the billing cycle.

The DataPro plan (2 GB of data) for $25 per month is designed for people who regularly download or stream music and video or use other high bandwidth applications. According to AT&T 98% iPhone customers use less than 2 GB in a month on average. If you do exceed the allocated amount you will get an additional 1 GB of data for $10 and if you go over, you will automatically receive another 1 GB at the same price.

Current iPhone users are safe from having to change to the new plan however they are planning on rolling it out to both new and current customers later. Interesting how the new plans come about when everyone is itching to upgrade to the just announced iPhone 4.  I wonder if the new plan changes will make people switch service providers or perhaps switching to a new phone. Will you give up your iPhone in the search for a better service plan?
