Last week I was lucky enough to spend the evening with Lisa Laporta of HGTV’s “Designed to Sell,” she offered some amazing advice on how to get my clutter under control and make our living space, well livable.
Not only that but she also helped me pick the best paint for our space. Did you know that it is important to add a primer before painting? I never did. I learned that primer reduces the amount of top coats you need and allows for better coverage and durability. Using primer can also save you time and money and who doesn’t need som extra time and money?
The 2009 KILZ brand Roller Report found that one in five moms spend more time and money on her child’s room than other areas of her home.
KILZ Clean Start primer has zero VOC and low-odor and available at Walmart for approx. $21-25 per gallon. In addition to the primer Lisa helped me pick out an amazing color for my condo, Crisp Wheat. Totally LOVE LOVE LOVE KILZ ~ We purchased a house in November of 2007 ~ Upon the warmer weather in 2008 it was discovered that a most odorous smell was coming from the formal living/dining room ~ Bad pets ~ Or rather bad owners who never properly cleaned up after their pets ~ After several carpet cleanings we decided to rip said carpet and replace with hardwood flooring ~ When the carpet and padding were ripped up, it was discovered that the entire subfloor was stained ~ We used 4 gallons of KILZ on the subfloor to kill and cover the smell ~ It worked ~ No smell and I now have beautiful hardwood floors ~ Thanks for giveaway ~ If chosen, I would use to refinish said rooms with fresh paint and accessories, like dining room chairs ~

I just entered the KILZ contest! My 3 year old would love to have his room go from cream (with pinkish undertones.yes.pinkish!) to a very “boy” blue. I’m sure he’d like a whole kamikaze of boy themed stuff in there from rockets and cars to superheroes. However, I’d love to theme it out a little less tornado-style and a little more OCO-style (obsessively compulsively organized) with a shelf along the ceiling, an adorable bench, chalkboard wall, and some cute, just-his-height cubbies for storage. Maybe I’d even turn his closet into a cool fort.

I entered and sent out a Tweet. I’ve been watching so much HGTV lately that I’m starting to hate my house, LOL! Several rooms need help but I’d start with my upstairs powder room. When we bought the house two years ago the plan was to start in the kitchen and slowly re-model down the stairs to the bedrooms. At least the kitchen is (almost) done!

My attic could use a room makeover. I have a warm and colorful home but, I am really baffled with the attic. It has too much white and the little color applied has gone all wrong. I really need this space set up as an office in order to get studying done. We’re currently renting an adorable little house that has suffered much abuse at the hands of former tenants. So now in addition to the everyday wear and tear that comes with two dogs, two adults, and one VERY curious toddler, we have the dirt and scuff marks from what looks like a family of wildebeests that previously lived here. We do have permission to paint the walls, but it’s expensive, and being that it’s someone else’s house, it’s unfortunately not at the top of our budget right now. We’ve tried to hide the scuffs and carpet stains with furniture, but there’s only so much we can do. And with a toddler having white walls in nearly every room is pretty much asking for disaster. Oh, and did I mention its ALL eggshell? I swear if you were so much as to touch the wall with a feather it would leave a big black mark. I’ve tried everything to remove the scuffs, but the only way they’re going anywhere is if I paint over them.

Kilz is a great product. I moved into a house years ago that had some smoke damage from a fire. They had painted the walls but the soot stains bled through. I repainted with Kilz and it worked great.

I was just telling (well laughing too, crazy like) my husband that we have lived here for 7 years and never once touched our bedroom. We’ve worked on the whole house EXCEPT the bedroom. Its impossible ugly. One wall has a horrific border on it, well some of its ripped down. Our 2 walls have cracks going down them from settling (probably more than $500 can handle but who knows). The carpet is mauve! haha yeah mauve like it was cool in the early 90′s mauve. It’s a big space and we don’t know what to do with it or how to fix it. Before I go I have to tell you about the TV hole. The previous owners cut holes in the walls for the TV and VCR to fit in!! It’s hideous. HELP!

My family room/den could use a $500.00 make over. I have been updating it a little at a time but I could appreciate putting the finishing touches to it like merchandising the room and updating the light fixtures and lighting. I plan on including a booth (restaurant) in one portion of it. I’ve got ideas; just low on cash!!!

The paint’s chipping in my bathroom now, and it’s completely lacking a bathtub — I’d knock out a wall and extend the bathroom into the adjacent bedroom, repaint the walls in a soothing green, and retile the walls for the new tub/shower to make it a dream come true instead of the nightmare it is!

Move desks or exercise equipment to another area of the home, or consider offsite storage. It’s amazing how polished a headboard can make a room feel. If you don’t have one, try painting the wall a bold color to add drama and depth. Keep color in accent pieces and the walls crisp and bright.

My laundry room could use a make over. We have built a second bathroom on one side and a family room on the other side. It’s smack dab in the middle with it’s ugly block walls and cement floor. The washer and dryer are just sitting there waiting for walls to be built around them.

We currently do the wash in the basement and carry the wet clothes upstairs to the laundry room. I’d LOVE to get the wall torn out, plumbing updated, washer added, and room “madeover,” and as DIY’er, I think I can do it for nearly the $500 I hope to win!
