building a playground, building a community

A few weeks back (I know I’m way behind), I was honored with the opportunity to work with Kaboom and Kool Aid to build a new playground in Inglewood, Ca, with several other mom bloggers. Now I’ve never been one to go dig in the dirt but this sounded like a worthy cause.

It was a great experience and it was amazing to see so many people come up to support a good cause and a great community. There were men and woman from every age group, and every race, out lending a hand. The best part was seeing the school kids in the school yard watch us build them a new playground. They stood on the black asphalt eagerly waiting for it to be finished.

Reverend Run, his wife Justine Simmons and their children and more than 200 volunteers, plus a handful of bloggers joined forces to build the playground. We (the bloggers) were tasked with putting together one of the slides; however, do to some technical difficulties (not fault of ours) one of the screws got stuck. Figures right? Anyhow we found some other work to do, some shuffled dirt, some turned cement and others painted park benches.

The new Inglewood playground built by KaBOOM!, Kool-Aid and the City of Inglewood is part of an initiative with a twofold purpose: to promote the importance of children getting out to play and to remind parents to encourage their kids to do so. Since June 2008, KaBOOM! and Kool-Aid have joined forces to build 26 playgrounds, serving more than 300,000 children in more than 20 cities across the country. This new playground eventually will serve more than 100,000 children in the Inglewood community.
