4 ways mom entrepreneurs are different than other entrepreneurs

More and more moms are taking the leap to entrepreneurship but their reasons aren’t necessarily the same as the average entrepreneur.

Growing up, it was never my plan to own my own business. Sure I had dreams and aspirations, but they were always about working for another company. I had dreams of becoming the Senior New Media Producer working at  a high profile entertainment company. I had dreams of driving my Volkswagen Touareg home after a challenging day at work to my artsy loft, somewhere in a hip downtown area.

However, all that changed after I became pregnant with my daughter. I had the hardest time finding decent maternity clothes, and finding a great daycare location service was impossible. After my daughter was born I became even more frustrated, I wanted to find unique clothes and toys for her. But I just couldn’t find what I was looking for.

But I went back to work and noticed my goals and interests started to shift. I was no longer interested in the programming side of my business I wanted to manage. So I moved on to the management role and got pregnant again.

I still had an awful time finding cute maternity clothes and cool baby clothes so I decided I wanted to create my own store. So I worked on finding products to sell, attended a handful of conventions and launched my online store. It was fun, working on the side.

After my son was born, everything changed. I lost my desire to work out side of the home. My focus moved to growing my online business so I can make the transition into becoming a full-time mom entrepreneur and that is where I am at today.

Mom entrepreneurs are different in so many ways every decision and every move we make all stems from motherhood.

Lisa Druxman from Entrepeneur.com list 4 ways mom entrepreneurs are different than other entrepreneurs in her “Mompreneur Column”.

  1. Where we find inspiration
  2. How we work
  3. Where we work
  4. Why we work

I currently have an 11yr old daughter, but I feel as though I’ve missed the most precious moments of her life. Why? Because I had her pretty young, unplanned, worked full time, and obtained my bachelors and masters degree, both full time. My schedule has always been BUSY.

My hubby and I are now working towards expanding our family and my #1 priority is to be there fully for our children. This is my motivation for taking the leap into becoming a mom in business.

I currently work as a Project Manager for the defense company, Lockheed Martin. I work for someone else because this is what was safe. Not much risk, do my job and go home. I’ve always had a desire for entrepreneurship, but was timid to go for it. Now, I feel as though I must become a Mompreneur in order to truly live the life I want to live with the freedom that I want and be the mom that I want to be to our kids.

    Thanks for starting this discussion,
